Mowing Lawns
As long as a regular weekly mowing schedule is maintained, it can make a big difference in the health of your lawn.
- Remove only about 1/3 of the grass in one mowing session.
- Mow high (2-3) inches. Mowing short weakens the root system and gives weeds a chance to over take your grass. In hotter temperatures, raising your lawn mower another 1/2inch will improve drought resistance. - Make sure your blades are sharpened. Dull blades will tear the grass and the torn leaves may give the appearance of a frayed lawn, and might be more valuranble to disease.
- Mulch your lawn if you can. Grass clippings are 85 percent water and are high in nitrogen, which makes a great compost and helps restore nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil.
- Cut your lawn in a different direction every week. This will reduce soil compaction and tearf wear from the wheels. This will also, cut more leaf surface on weeds, and makes it harder to compete with the grass.
