Watering Recommendations

- Watering 2.5cm (1 inch) a week including rainfalls during the summer will maintain a healthy vibrant lawn.
- In dry conditions, watering your entire lawn, infrequently, longer and heavily, twice a week will encourage deep roots and reduce the risk of lawn disease: Overwatering and daily sprinkling encourages shallow roots and facilitates burn spots.
- Watering in the morning is ideal because less water is lost through evaporation and wind. Evening watering leaves the lawn wetter for longer, which can increase the chance of fungal disease.
- Set inground sprinklers to dawn and only once or twice a week.
- Measure with a rain gauge or cup to ensure your lawn is recieving the proper amount.
- Hand watering works best for gardens and planters.
- Applying mulch in gardens will also keep the soil moist and help decrease water evaporation.
- Shady areas (4 hours of sunlight) need less water, but grass around larger trees will need more since the roots will consume the water and the tree canopy may block the rainfall.
- Lawns may become brown in hotter weather, it is in a dormant state, and will return to green during wetter, cooler temperatures. Healthy lawns can survive several weeks in this state.
